Walter A. Maier (1893-1950) and The Lutheran Hour

(0)
Dr. Walter Arthur Maier ( (4th October 1893 - 11th January 1950) became the first speaker of The Lutheran Hour (1930-50). Three generations of Maiers have been involved with the expansion of the Christian Luther faith and the use of the radio. (See picture of 4 members of the family.) In 1917 a group of 12 men attended a convention of the Lutheran Church Missouri synod in Milwaukee to settle a $100,000 debt incurred by the church body… Goal accomplished they formed the Lutheran Laymen’s League (LLL). Walter was one of the 12. In March 1923 a Walter editorial asked the question Why not a Lutheran Broadcasting station? Funds were raised and a 500 watt transmitter was purchased - the first Christian radio station was born at Concordia Seminary. The Gospel Voice happened on Sunday, 4th December 1924 at 9:15 pm. Walter had 2 weekly programs and promised This is only the beginning. In 1929, with the goal of spreading the gospel from coast to coast, network broadcasting was investigated. In 1930 he learned the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) did not allow putting religious time on a commercial basis. The LLL were enthusiastic about religious broadcasting and between the LLL and the Walther League they raised $ 94,000. In 1930 the LLL committed to fund for 1 year a broadcasting weekly national radio station called*The Lutheran Hour. Thursday, 2nd October 1930 at 10:00 (Eastern) and 7:00 (Pacific) Walter was the first speaker. The first season lasted for 36 weeks. Due to financial concerns it was discontinued from June 1931 until 1934. (Read 'Entry into radio broadcasting ') From the time it went off national air Walter never stopped working for its return. To avoid prohibitive costs they started operations on the newly formed Mutual Broadcasting System. They never looked back. (Read ‘The Lutheran Hour’ and ’ Continued growth’) During the 20 years (1930-50) he served as speaker as the USA and the world went through the upheaval the Great Depression and WW11. He admonished the listeners with the Law of God and comforted them with the Gospel of Jesus Christ - a tone that rings true to today. Walter was more than the speaker of The Lutheran Hour, he was the founder of the flagship radio ministry. He died suddenly on January 12th, 1950. Tributes poured in. Billy Graham said Walter was the greatest combination of preacher and scholar that America has produced this century. This radio show The Lutheran Hour steeped in devotion , evangelism and outreach has grown into a ministry that reaches more than 100 million people worldwide each week in 50 countries. All of this indicates real success for Dr. Walter Arthur Maier’s vision Bringing Christ to the Nations. Sources Lutheran Hour Ministries Maier Family History Wikipedia

By reading the Bible she came to a place of belief and found peace. They moved to Richmond and she became involved with Richmond Young Women’s Christian Association (RYWCA). She lacked confidence when speaking publicly and preparation was painful. In 1892 she wanted answers to Questions. She had asked to be filled not crucified. Romans ch.6 v 6-11 became a power to her. I know the Risen Lord From this time she felt liberty in speaking and experienced power of prayer , the Bible came alive, Christ became real to her. She was asked to give a message The Lord manifested his power and gave liberty. In 4 years the RYWCA numbers rose from 6,900 to 13,000. 1902 Jessie was asked about starting a convention in Wales by a group of Welsh ministers. In 1903 the Llandrindod Wells convention began. Jessie became involved in building a national Keswick connection with more making more local yearly conferences accessible. 1906 she spoke out publicly that she believed the Keswick trustees were trying to to limit her ministry due to her gender. Jessie and Evan Roberts founded The Overcomer (1908-14) (1920+), a monthly periodical, clearly aimed at Christian workers and helping to maintain communication within the Keswick network. In 1919 she wrote The Magna Carta Of Christian Women Jessie ran 8* The Overcomer conferences in Swanwick (1919-27) By this time her health had deteriorated, William had died and she was living in a flat. David Tsutada and his son Joshua are both Japanese missionaries. David is probably the least well known of the two but he is referred to as being the 'John Wesley' of Japan. He studied law at Cambridge and King's College London and at one stage envisioned himself as one day becoming Japan's prime minister. He also felt a calling to the church. He wrote a 14 page letter to his father who took his letter to an all night prayer meeting. The following day he received a cable with just two words' Obey God'. Joshua, his son, is referred to being the 'voice of emerging evangelical leaders'. He followed his father into the ministry and spent seventeen years working in India. Both David and Joshua had held high posts in several Christian organisations. Joshua has been chairman of the Japan Evangelical Association and the Evangelical Fellowship Asia.

Hugh Cook Faringdon’s feast day is November 15th . Hugh Cook Farington was the last abbot of Reading Monastery. He was found guilty of high treason because he did not accept that HenryVIII was the supreme head of religious matters. He believed the Pope was the supreme head of religious matters. Because he was found guilty of treason he suffered the indignity of being hung, drawn and quartered in front of Reading’s Abbey Gate on November 14th 1539. I have put together several pieces of information about H.C.F. The first piece is like a time-line. The second sheet briefly explains about how the dissolution of the monasteries cam about. The third sheet is Wikipedia . The fourth sheet is a painting depicting H.C.F. being prepared for execution - the painting is in Reading’s Abbey gate. I have also included a word search with answers.
